American Apparel sells this great dress called the pocket frock. I wanted one so bad... until I tried it on. It only comes in one size, and where I'm so small it looked like I was wearing a potato sack!
I decided to make one myself and I think it turned out pretty good! I just bought a long sleeved t-shirt from AA (so I could still wear it at work) and took it mostly apart cut it up and then sewed it back together. So I'll just walk you through it in case you want to make one yourself.
You'll need:
- a large shirt (long enough to be a dress)
- a pair of scissors
- thread
- a sewing machine (hopefully a Serger if you have one, I don't)
- a t-shirt that fits you well that will be used as a pattern
1. Just start by cutting the seems of the t-shirt and remove the sleeves as well.
2. Lay it flat on the ground with your t-shirt 'pattern' laid on top centered from the neck
3. Cut around the shirt (don't included the sleeves) leaving about an inch for seem allowance
4. Lay the sleeves and cut using your t-shirt as a pattern
5. Pin and sew back together!
Anyway, that may not be the best instructions but if anyone really wants more details just ask! I also added pockets to mine using extra fabric I cut off from the shirt. Here are the before and after pics!
