Cupcake Sunday

The Cupcake:
Well not really a cupcake, it's a brownie. They were all out of cupcakes at Rocket Bakery where I did my yoga this morning, but I thought this brownie would do the trick since it so pretty. It's chocolate flour less brownie with some white icing that I thought kind of looked like a mustache.

A Little About Me:
This is my last Sunday in St. John's. I decided to walk down to the waterfront/harbour where all the boats hang out while I waited for my ride after yoga and thought it would make a good pictures for today. I'm almost all packed and most of my stuff has been sold. I'm so excited to move but I'm really going to miss St. John's. Hopefully I can come visit lots.

Black and White: Take Two

Another quick outfit post. I wore black and white to a going away dinner with friends and then I had a going away party and I wore black and white again. I guess I'm just not feeling colour right now?

I love this body suit from American Apparel. It's really comfortable and the low back makes it so sexy without even trying. I paired it  high waisted shorts and black tights and ankle boots. Sorry for the low quality photos,  I'm still trying to save up for a better camera.

Black and White

Just a quick outfit post. I wore this for a little going away dinner with a couple of my good friends tonight. We went to Basho (I've featured it before in one of my St. John's post) for a lovely supper. It was so nice to spend time with them, we just laughed and gossiped and laughed some more. I'm really going to miss my friends when I move away.

The dress I wore has a peter pan collar which I love but never really thought it was my style. I definitely think it looks better with my short hair then it did with my long hair. I tried curling my hair today but it didn't really work. I need to learn how to style shorter hair but for now I'll wear it au-natural. I paired this look with some black flat boots to keep it from looking totally prissy.

A Hair Story

I got my hair cut today and I'm very excited to show you my haircut photos.

First, a quick hair history. Basically I've always had long hair. As a kid, long hair was required for gymnastics and dance so we were able to put our hair up in a bun or curl it. Two years in a row I cut it up to my chin after competition season was done. Besides those two years when I was 9 and 10 years old my hair has always been past my shoulders. And it's been long enough to do the Alanis Morrisette (or the Mermaid) for the past six years. I love having my hair long, it was like my favorite accessory. So now you know what a big deal this was, lets get on with the pictures.

The first picture are of me and my long hair. I decided to go to Sound Salon. It's been voted best salon in the city for a few years in a row, plus it's an Aveda Salon so it made me feel more comfortable that the hair stylist had very good training. By recommendation of a friend I choose a young woman named Evelyn to cut my hair. She was so nice and made me feel extremely at easy. I was pretty nervous on the way there but after talking to her she made me feel great about my decision. She also took my hair's texture and my concerns in to consideration and gave me a really great cut. I'm very happy with it. I may possible go back next week for a free bang trim, she suggested I wait so I could get use to the length and then decide if I want fringe or not. I'm so glad I choose her. If you are living in St. John's and looking for a new hair stylist I highly suggest you book an appointment with her. The salon itself was great too!

She gave me a light feathering on the ends, not quite layers. This will help my hair curl naturally when I let it hair dry. It's long enough that I can put it in a ponytail and I was still able to donate 14 inches of hair to Locks of Love. You can't believe how different it felt when she first cut it off. My hair feels so light and so healthy and also thicker but the best feeling is knowing that my hair will help make someone else feel beautiful during their difficult time.

Cupcake Sunday

The Cupcake:
Organic vanilla cake mix mixed with matcha powder and vanilla frosting with green food colouring, green for St. Patty's day.

And a little about me:
Day after St. Patty's, I thought I would be hungover but I was smart last night and I was able to wake up feeling fresh and even get to an afternoon yoga class. I'm getting my hair cut on Wednesday and I'm getting so excited! Also my last shifts at American Apparel are coming up fast so I need to decide if there is anything I want before I no longer have a discount. So far... my list is long I'm trying to cut it down since moving is so expensive.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

This is probably going to be my last St. Patty's day in Newfoundland. It's a pretty big deal here since most of the population is Irish descendants and the rest are just really appreciative of any holiday that promotes drinking.

I just wanted to share a few pictures of my outfit and my night. It was a friend's birthday party as well as being St. Patrick's day, so I started the night off at a mellow house party with a few friends. We went downtown afterwards to a local bar called Distortions which was having a 'Dance through the Ages' party, got there just in time to hear the last few 80's songs and party threw the best of the 90's. It was a fun night, George street was packed with a sea of drunk people and I even got to see a few entertaining fights between some strangers. Happy St. Patrick's Day.

Pi, Gourmet Pizza

Another restaurant to add to my guide of St. John's. This one is another crucial one: where to get good pizza? The answer is Pi. It's a small restaurant off Duckworth, it's cute and warm and the pizzas are good, plus they have fun math related humor on their menu, what's not to like?

It's a pretty laid back atmosphere, they are licensed and have Quidi Vidi beer on tap, always a plus. I know you can also do a take out order (like most pizza places.) What I really love about Pi is that they have the most interesting pizza combinations and they are all delicious! For example, today I had the Fibonacci, thin crust pizza with an olive oil and herb base, Gouda, red onion, baby greens, toasted walnuts and caramelized pears. Yum! If you aren't into all that they have regular pizza as well or you could create your own out of their huge selection of possible toppings including shaved steak, sweet potatoes, smoked salmon, and grapes (to name just a few).

Please excuse the state of myself in these photos, this was a nice bite after we spent the morning and afternoon packing for our move!

Some other great local pizza locations are:
Stogger's Pizza - loaded with toppings, a little bit more traditional.
Piatto's Pizza - Italian pizza cooked in wood burning stove (never actually been there,  but heard good things).
Yellowbelly Brewery - also have their own pizza oven and they have a few delicious pizza combinations as well, and a great menu of other things too.
Old Town Pizzeria - definitely try their bbq Hawaiin pizza, the best hangover food ever!

Rocket Bakery

I'm not going to be in St. John's for too much longer, so I'll continue on with my guide. Today we look at the Rocket Bakery. It's located on Water Street, near the big Scotia Bank building.

It's a cafeteria style restaurant, they serve sandwiches, fritattas, home made soup, and obviously baked goods. It's kind of got a retro feel going on inside. The staff is friendly and you kind of get the sense that everybody knows everybody (which is probably true). They also have a generous seating section where sometimes they have live music.

Upstairs the have an extra room that can be rented out. I recently attended a yoga class (that had a DJ!). It was  great class, the instructor is a women named LB, she was great! I really enjoyed the music, it was soothing and yet up beat enough to keep you energized until the end where it was just added to the relaxation. After class everyone was treated to a complimentary tea or coffee for the baker downstairs.

I definitely suggested eating here if you get the chance and if you are lucky enough to be able to attended the Sunday afternoon yoga classes then take advantage of them it was great.

Cupcake Sunday

I've noticed a lot of other bloggers starting to do weekly updates, the most popular being 'my week in photos' using instagram. I've decided to jump on this train, but I'm going to put a little cupcake spin on it. Welcome to the first edition of Cupcake Sunday!

Basically, I'll feature a cupcake every Sunday and throw in a little bit what's going on in my life.

The Cupcake:

This is a healthy cupcake using boxed rainbow cake mix, unsweetened apple sauce, water and egg whites. Replace the oil with apple sauce, the eggs with egg whites and follow the directions on the box. I used a can of pre-made icing, 1 tbsp per cupcake.

 A little bit of me:

I've made a huge decision: I'm going to cut and donate my hair. I have had long, LONG hair for about five years now (maybe longer) and it's time for a change, plus I will be helping someone else. I've decided on a mid length bob, picture Alexa Chung. I've created a board in Pinterest for cuts that I'd like, you can look at it here. I'd like it to be textured, and easy to wear like my current style but shorter. I don't want to look older and I don't want it to be flat or blunt. I'm nervous but excited. The appointment isn't until March 21, so I have time to work up my nerve/ decided to back out.

Floral Dress and Birthday Dinner

It was my friends birthday yesterday. A few of us went out for a nice supper at Basho, a local Japanese restaurant. It was a really lovely night, the food was amazing! We went out for a few drinks afterwards to the Duke which was fun; some pool, some gin and great friends.

It feels like I haven't dressed up in a long time. I decided to wear my this dress from Katie. It's not really my style, but I very much enjoy the floral pattern and the colours. I really like the one shoulder and I decided that with black tights, some lace up boots and casual hair it could totally feel like my style.

I'm so glad I decided to wear this dress. It was so comfortable and now that I've lost a bit of weight it fits me much better. I'm sorry for the horrible pictures, I'm still using a good old point and shoot. It's better then the last point and shoot I was using but still not great especially with bad lighting. I am trying to save for a DSLR but they are expensive so please bear with me through these not so great photos.
